It's only about a week until all of the neighborhood
children transform themselves into witches, goblins, and probably Star Wars
characters and the occasional mini-<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0043CWL3A/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0043CWL3A&linkCode=as2&tag=aollifestyle-20&linkId=DULN7GAZUBJHFLMM">Donald
Trump</a>, and descend upon our doorsteps to dare us to "trick or treat!"
With this time-honored tradition comes concerns about trick-or-treating safety,
and if you are a parent of a child who is Celiac or has gluten sensitivity, you
have the added challenge of what exactly can they eat from their
trick-or-treating haul?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Many Mainstream
Candies Are G-Free<br />
</b>On Halloween, it's all about the candy, right? The good news is that many
mainstream candies that are likely to be doled out at Halloween are actually
gluten-free. <a href="http://celiac.org/">Celiac.org</a> has put out an updated list for October 2015 of the
latest U.S. gluten-free candies, plus a handy 'Company Allergy-free Key'. Stay one step ahead of the
inevitable question, "Hey mom, what can I eat?" by checking <span style="color: blue;"><a href="https://celiac.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Updated-Candy-List2.pdf" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">this list</span></a>
</span>of gluten-free candies likely to end up in your child's trick-or-treat bag this
season. Reminder that this list is a guideline and it's best to double check
the packaging information and ingredients list prior to consuming any candy,
even if it is on the list. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Trade Up!<br />
</b>Buy a secret stash of gluten-free candy that you know your child likes, so
you can broker a trade with any non-g-free treat they may have received on
Halloween night. It's a great way to deflect disappointment about any candy
they received that they cannot eat. Feeling more creative than that? Try your
hand at making your own secret stash of g-free candy to surprise your child
with for a trade. <a href="http://glutenfreecooking.about.com/od/dessertsandsweets/r/gfcaramelcorn.htm">This
gluten-free caramel corn recipe</a> is easy and delicious and will make you
nominee for Mom of the Year. Plus, it is easy to freeze so you can make it in
advance. I am working my way up to attempting the <a href="http://candy.about.com/od/halloweencandyrecipes/ss/candy_corn_sbs.htm">homemade
candy corn</a> and the <a href="http://candy.about.com/od/toffeerecipes/r/choctoffeebars.htm">homemade
toffee bars</a>, the latter of which, let's be honest, is mostly for me and
will likely never make it to the trading floor.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Throw a Party</b><br />
Take some of the emphasis off of trick or treating by planning and throwing
your own Halloween shindig. You can prep the menu to be <a href="http://celiacdisease.about.com/od/glutenfreeholidaymenus/a/HalloweenFood.htm">chockfull
of g-free goodies</a> ("severed finger" cheese sticks are always a
hit), and you can enlist the kids to help make scary decorations or plan <a href="http://mylifeandkids.com/30-awesome-halloween-games-for-kids/">games to
play</a>. (Be sure to have your camera ready for the Donut Chomp!) Include a <a href="http://familycrafts.about.com/cs/halloweentheme/a/091399.htm">costume</a>
parade and contest to help redirect the focus from the candy to the costumes or
buy some extra pumpkins and host a pumpkin decorating contest. Prizes, of
course, can include g-free candies or desserts or even a Halloween gift bag
stocked with inexpensive toys.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>And Speaking of Non-Food Goodies...Take the
Teal Pumpkin Pledge<br />
</b>In 2014, Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE) launched their Teal
Pumpkin Project to raise awareness of food allergies and promote inclusion of
all trick-or-treaters at Halloween. You've likely already seen teal pumpkins
showing up around your neighborhood or being posted to social media—they
represent families who are advocating for a safer, happier, more inclusive
Halloween by providing non-food items for trick or treaters, such as Halloween-themed
pencils, spider rings, glow sticks, bracelets, or stickers. This year, show
your support of children with food allergies and <a href="https://www.foodallergy.org/teal-pumpkin-project/pledge">take the pledge</a>
to join 100,000 households who are participating in the Teal Pumpkin Project.<o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
With a little extra preparation and diligence, you and your
kids can enjoy this Halloween with little worry about getting tricked for a
treat. Happy haunting!<o:p></o:p></div>

pre-packaged mixes and flour blends, and make your own. It will literally save
you thousands of dollars over time. Stop relying on processed gluten-free foods
to make up your daily meals. Experiment with making your own broth rather than
buying expensive gluten-free broths.</span></li>

frozen food aisles for sales (make sure those products are 100% gluten-free, of
course!). Scout out your local farmer's market for seasonal inspiration.</span></li>
<li><b style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt; line-height: 115%;">Eat
lean to save green!</span></b><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt; line-height: 115%; text-indent: -0.25in;"> Turn to lean meats such as fish and poultry
and low-cost eggs for high protein (or plant-based proteins like beans lentils
and for our g-free vegan friends). Use those specialty items to complement
meals or as a special, occasional treat. You will soon see your grocery bill
dwindle down. And if you snag a sale? Be sure to load up your freezer.</span></li>

<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">So, how do you convert a recipe
from gluten flour to gluten-free? Well, the<span style="color: #555555;"> </span></span><a href="http://glutenfreegoddess.blogspot.com/2007/01/cooking-baking-gluten-free-tips-for.html"><span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">Gluten Free Goddess</span></a><span style="color: #555555; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">advises
that for every one cup of all-purpose flour cited in a recipe, you can swap it
out for 140 grams of your favorite gluten-free flour blend. Remember, every
gluten-free flour has a different weight per cup. So, you'll want to buy a
kitchen scale! Safe and popular g-free choices for baking can include sorghum
flour, brown rice flour, white and sweet rice flour, millet flour, buckwheat
flour, quinoa flour, certified gluten-free oat flour, and teff flour. However,
make sure sources of corn, millet, sorghum, etc flours are 100% gluten-free!<br />
<span style="color: #404040; mso-themecolor: text1; mso-themetint: 191;"><br />
</span>Not to be outdone, almond flour, hazelnut flour, chestnut and peanut
flours are high protein non-grain options. And do not count out legume flours
such as chick pea flour and soy flour. The very trendy coconut flour is a high
fiber addition to g-free blends that attracts moisture and adds a lot of
texture and flavor.<span style="color: #404040; mso-themecolor: text1; mso-themetint: 191;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
Online shopping is the wave of the present,
and future. Shoot, between eBay, Amazon and their peers, as well as food
delivery services like Schwan’s and Peapod, a person could almost never leave their
house to complete all their shopping! <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
That’s pretty cool, but what about a
gluten-free home delivery service? I have to admit, I hadn’t thought of that
idea much – and until recently, I had serious doubts about whether or not it
even existed. Turns out I was wrong, very wrong! There are <i>tons</i> of online shopping portals for gluten-free food, and nearly as
many sites that function as comprehensive lists for all of them, alive with
links and everything! Let’s take a look at a few:<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<a href="http://gfmall.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: black; mso-themecolor: text1;">http://gfmall.com/</span></a><br />
This handy site splits foods up into categories, and lets you know where you
can go to order them. Snacks, meals, you name it, they have this site so
categorized you’d have to try to miss something. And it’s very thorough – much
of America is represented here. They even have beer, lots of beer!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<a href="http://www.friendshipcircle.org/blog/2013/10/15/10-great-websites-to-purchase-gluten-free-food/" target="_blank"><span style="color: black; mso-themecolor: text1;">http://www.friendshipcircle.org/blog/2013/10/15/10-great-websites-to-purchase-gluten-free-food/</span></a><br />
This website functions somewhat as a top-ten list of sites at which to purchase
gluten-free food for delivery. Some big names appear here: Amazon of course,
but also niche offerings like Allergy Free Kosher and others. This is a
definite bookmark! <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<a href="http://www.sendmeglutenfree.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: black; mso-themecolor: text1;">http://www.sendmeglutenfree.com/</span></a><br />
This is a little bit different, and a really cool idea. Here we have a monthly
subscription service that introduces you to new gluten free products – similar
to more well-known services like Birchbox (makeup products), Stitch Fix
(clothes) and BarkBox (probably self-explanatory!) And not only does it just
introduce you to new gluten-free stuff, it’s feedback-based – so you can
receive discounts, etc.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
How cool are these ideas?! Now, I wouldn’t
recommend being a shut-in, but winter is somehow approaching quickly… This
could be just what we need!<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
I wish I were so lucky. I’m talking about those fortunate
folks out there who get the summers off! Oh to be a kid again, when June, July
and August were light and carefree. If you happen to be a gluten-free teacher,
or maybe a snowplow driver, listen up because this blog concerns you! <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Let me set the scenario: As the leaves prepare to turn, you
prepare to head back to the daily grind of your workplace. There are meetings
to be had, paperwork to be done, deadlines to meet – but what about that other obstacle
you haven’t had to deal with since late spring? That’s right, I’m talking about
making your gluten-free lifestyle mesh with a decidedly gluten-heavy office.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It doesn’t have to be a hurdle that’s impossible to
overcome. First, the simple tips:<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">Let your co-workers know about your diet, right
out of the gate</span></li>
<li><span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">Stock up on your own gluten-free snacks and keep
them protected – to avoid cross contamination yes, but also to avoid poaching!
They can be tasty, too!</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Symbol; text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal;"> </span></span><span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">Be polite but consistent in your turndowns of
others’ gluten-laced offerings – this sets a precedent that will only benefit
you down the line</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Symbol; text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal;"> </span></span><span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">Keep a little black book – mental or otherwise –
of g-free restaurants near your office so when those inevitable work lunches
pop up, you’ll be prepared with a winning suggestion</span></li>
</ul>
<!--[if !supportLists]--><br />
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;">

<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpLast" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now, the potentially awkward: What if you are a sufferer of
celiac disease or gluten allergies but have a co-worker (or multiple
co-workers) who are on a gluten-free diet, not due to celiac's or gluten
intolerance? It may go a little something like <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMZIAlKFRY4" target="_blank">this</a>.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Joking aside, first, you could inform them about celiac disease (whether
you have it or not), just to give them some perspective on the very real roots
of gluten-free living. Additionally, explain cross contamination to them –
that, paired with some celiac facts, could help change their thinking about not
only your diet, but their own. Every little bit could make life easier for you!<o:p></o:p></div>

suggestions for at-work breakfasts, lunches and snacks. Happy working, and

Back-to-school time – it’s always a mad dash, isn’t it?! There
are clothes to buy, teachers to meet, pencil boxes to fill and bus routes to
memorize. It can be an exciting time, yes, but stressful as well. Potentially
adding to that stress, whether you’re a parent, a kindergartner or a seasoned
Senior, is the integration of a gluten-free diet into the at-school life.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
But hey, what am I here for, if not to try and impart some
wisdom to calm those new school year fears?! A great baseline not all of us might
know about is something called the Section 504 plan. The Section 504 plan,
meant to deter discrimination against those with disabilities, requires a
school to provide gluten-free students with appropriate lunchtime meals. Clearly,
this is a great place to start if you or your child suffers from Celiac
disease. Fill one out, share it with your school’s administration and start the
year off with some peace of mind. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For the rest of us gluten-free folks, Celiac or not, there
are universal things we can all stick to. Help your child prepare a “Yes I’m
gluten free, and here’s what that means” elevator speech if you deem it
necessary, just to help thwart some awkwardness that’s sure to arise. Making
sure before they leave your care for the schoolyard that they have a good grasp
on what foods are off limits is a must, as is getting together a list of whom
to go to at school if they run into an issue.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In that same vein, meet with your child’s teachers,
principals, nurses, etc. prior to the start of school to share information
about his or her dietary needs. Lastly, make it fun! Perhaps giving your
child’s teacher a gluten-free “goodie bag” to stow away in the classroom would
spice things up a bit, and give him or her a taste of home while away from its
comfort.<o:p></o:p></div>

The tips, tricks and tried-and-true methods surrounding a

August has arrived, and with it have come back-to-school
thoughts for college-age students across the country. Now, a lot of us have
been to college, and that same “lot” know it can entail more than just class.

good health, especially for gluten-free students, is very realistic!<o:p></o:p></div>

Despite that possibility, one of the bigger complaints we
hear from gluten-free college students is that their university’s dining hall

period of adjustment, students find that many schools do offer good gluten-free
options such as dedicated menu items, toasters, refrigerators and the like –
it’s just all about getting to know your surroundings. So, does that mean it’s
easy to survive as a g-free student? By and large, yes, it seems that way. But,
what about thriving? Here are some inside baseball tips that might make the
difference between a so-so, and a super gluten-free college experience:<o:p></o:p></div>

As we gluten-free individuals know, despite all the cool
restaurants and recipes and tips and tricks that are available to us, it can be
easy to get into a dietary rut. I don<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri;">’</span>t know about you all, but my ruts tend to
revolve around the same rotation of foods, prepared the same way, week after
week. With our busy schedules, I suppose it<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri;">’</span>s human nature to err on the side of
comfort and convenience, rather than keeping things mixed up with only a little
extra effort.<o:p></o:p></div>

healthier gluten-free meals in a more efficient manner, as well. The great news

As you browse your local market for gluten-free goods, search the labels for

all fantasized about snatching a piece of fried chicken, taking a nice long sip

We also know that, for those of us
with Celiac disease, no vaccines, pharmaceuticals or surgical procedures
currently exist to combat the effects of gluten. However, help could be on the
way! According to a recent story published by <i>Yahoo! Health</i>, drug companies currently are attempting to
develop a pill to mitigate the symptoms of accidental gluten ingestion <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri;">–</span>

gluten intolerance pharmaceuticals overall are still in their infancy and face
an uphill battle. Complex regulatory frameworks for the approval of drugs in
most countries is a major restraint on development. This is partly due to
rising incidence of Celiac disease, and lack of treatment options. On the
bright side, Celiac disease diagnoses are rising in lockstep with healthcare
expenditure, changing lifestyles, increasing awareness about healthcare, and
increasing number of initiatives by various governments and government
associations. This means we<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri;">’</span>re still trending upward! Don<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri;">’</span>t

The Fourth of July is all but upon
us! It's one of my favorite holidays, for multiple reasons: I love summertime,
I love being patriotic, I love fireworks and, last but not least, I love
celebratory cookouts!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
All this adds up to a great time,
but a friend of mine was confronted with a dilemma recently, and her story is
worth sharing, I think. She intends to have a July 4th cookout, but get this:
some of her guests are pretty adamant about having all the classic foods at the
party (burgers, sides - you get the idea), while two of the other attendees are
gluten and dairy free. The gluten-free guests still really want to be able to
participate without demanding a separate menu, and my friend is at a loss about
how to cater to both sides.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Luckily, there are simple answers
both for my friend, and for anyone else in a similar situation! It turns out
that you absolutely can put on an old-fashioned Independence Day cookout, while
making it accessible to gluten and dairy-free guests. Check out the great news
below!<o:p></o:p></div>

<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Burgers</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Don't fret about the main course:
these can be easily made or purchased gluten free. Use ground chuck or sirloin
to make your own, or buy a pack of Bubba Burgers. Udi's buns are gluten free,
as are Heinz ketchup, French's mustard and Vlasic pickles! <o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Salads</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
There are so many options here!
Potato and pasta salads and the like, when prepared properly of course, are
gluten free. Do watch out for dressings, but major brands like Kraft label
their ingredients very well.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Sides<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Worried about the chips, dips and
baked beans? No need! Lay's brand chips are excellently labeled and offer
plenty of options, and a simple bag of gluten-free tortilla chips and guacamole
can go a long way. As for those tasty beans, all of Bush's beans are now gluten
free, if you need something quicker than homemade.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Desserts</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Watermelon (or any kind of fresh
fruit!) is an obvious choice, but the options don't stop there. Fruit salads
are a logical step! Want something sweeter? There are tons of summer dessert
recipes out there using Oreos - check out Trader Joe<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">’</span>s <span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: blue;"><a href="http://www.traderjoes.com/fearless-flyer/article/1238" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">Joe-Joe<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">’</span>s</span></a> </span></span>as a g-free substitute, and get creative! And who doesn't like S'mores? Hershey's
chocolate is gluten free, as are Schar's graham crackers and Campfire
marshmallows. Get that fire going once the grilling is done!<o:p></o:p></div>

Ah, summer has arrived! And with it: heat, humidity,

It sure seems like we get busy this time of year, doesn’t
it? As soon as summer activities wind down, we dive right into back-to-school craziness, and before we know it, cold weather is upon us again! Luckily, we've got one more chance to soak up the fading, summer sun, and what better way to do so, than by celebrating with a Labor Day cookout?!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
By now most of us know that by itself, meat is generally the
safest of havens for gluten-free folks, but that doesn’t mean missteps are
impossible or caution can be eliminated. Whether you’re attending a barbeque or
doing the grilling yourself this Labor Day weekend, a list of tips to ensure
everything that’s supposed to be gluten free stays that way, couldn’t hurt!
Here are a few ideas:</div>
<ul>
<li><b style="text-indent: -0.25in;">Cross
contamination is your No. 1 enemy</b><span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"> – It’s common for grill racks to be
shared amongst several different foods, so watch carefully for what’s placed
where, and when. Separate utensils for turning gluten and non-gluten products
are a must, as is a clean grill (soap and water are a much better method than
an old bristle brush that could contain crumbs), and tinfoil for placing
beneath gluten-free dishes.</span><span style="font-size: 7pt; text-indent: -0.25in;"> </span></li>
<li><b style="text-indent: -0.25in;">Beer +
meat = sneakiness </b><span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">– While watching out for marinades that may contain
gluten is a widely accepted practice, what about that beer can chicken or those
beer brats? Those are two backdoor ways gluten can slip into places you don’t
want it. And those gluten-free beers? Even some of those are made with malted
wheat or barley, which could present issues for those with Celiac disease. Be
mindful of these often-overlooked issues, whether you’re drinking those brews,
or using them for added moisture in your meats!</span></li>
<li><b style="text-indent: -0.25in;">Not all
meats are fully gluten free – </b><span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">That huge porterhouse, when kept away from
any contaminants, yes, that big guy is gluten free. But, several other popular grilled
meats can present trouble for the gluten-free crowd: veggie burgers, turkey
burgers, hot dogs and sausages can contain filler product that may house
gluten, so make sure to check labels before digging in.</span></li>
</ul>

tips and tricks for making this Labor Day barbecue a good one. And, what’s a
good cookout without a new dish thrown in for kicks? We’ve also included a link

In less than three weeks, we will be gathering with loved
ones to celebrate Thanksgiving. And one day after that, the floodgates will
open to the busiest season of the year! Yes, the holidays are drawing near and
with them comes a flurry of holiday shopping, office gatherings, school pageants, and parties to attend and host. It
is a magical time with many special moments to share and enjoy—but it can also
be super busy and potentially stressful if you or your loved ones have
gluten-sensitivity or are Celiac.<o:p></o:p></div>

Fortunately, technology is here to make our lives easier
this season! From mobile banking to Twitter to Words with Friends, apps have
become a big part of a lot of our lives. And happily, there are some great apps
to help you make gluten-free choices during the holidays. So whether you are
gluten-free and needing help finding a g-free friendly place to eat in between
shopping sprees or you are hosting a holiday event and want to have g-free offerings,
I’d like to share some of my go-to apps that can help you make g-free choices

traveling or just exploring your own area!<br />

an indication of whether or not it contains gluten! To top that, if it does,
the app provides recommendations on alternatives.<br />

gluten-free cooking. It even has a share feature so you can pass recipes along

parties! These fun-filled, memory-making milestones are stressful enough to

their menu be sufficient? Do they double-use utensils? For gluten-free

oversee is remembered only for its fun and efficiency, here are some
gluten-free tips to check in with your caterer about!</span><br />
<br />
<b><i>Q: Does their
gluten-free menu extend beyond just what they happen to have laying around?</i></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Any kitchen could probably scrounge up
a few things that are gluten free – potato products, rice dishes, vegetable
trays, etc. – but you want your guests to really enjoy their meals. When
choosing a caterer, make sure their gluten-free offerings are up to par, and
not just an after-thought.</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;">
<span style="background: white; color: #212121; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;"><br /></span>
<span style="background: white; color: #212121; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;"><b><i>Q: How experienced
are they with gluten-free catering?</i></b><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Certainly, a business’ new venture
could be of higher caliber than a similar offering that a competitor has been
doing for some time. However, there are so many misconceptions about
gluten-free diets that it may be wise to choose experience and tried-and-true
methods over a start-up. Check those online review sites for guidance.</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;">
<span style="background: white; color: #212121; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;"><br /></span>
<span style="background: white; color: #212121; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;"><b><i>Q:Do they use
dedicated cookers and utensils for gluten-free dishes?</i></b><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Cross contamination is one of the
biggest ways gluten-free diners ingest gluten. Separate or properly prepared
ovens, unique utensils, dedicated fryers and the like are must-haves when
preparing gluten-free dishes alongside regular ones. Gluten can also hide in
sauces and garnishes, so make very sure your caterer knows their stuff! A
request to visit their kitchen before putting that deposit down might not be a
bad idea!</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;">
<span style="background: white; color: #212121; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;"><br /></span>
<span style="background: white; color: #212121; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;"><b><i>Q: Do they provide
gluten-free beverages? </i></b><o:p></o:p></span></div>
If you want your catering to be
comprehensive, be careful. Caterers might get the meat of the menu down when it
comes to gluten-free options, but gluten-free beverages are a necessity for
guests – especially those of legal drinking age. Gluten-free goers can still
partake in the fun of the party with new gluten-free alcohols and beers. So
make sure you don’t leave the gluten-free friend out of the toast – understand
beforehand that the caterer is prepared with a gluten-free drink options as
well!iBGFreehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05330351214906944585noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5752240550424368821.post-85922147433637117522015-04-24T07:52:00.001-07:002015-10-29T11:36:05.015-07:00Gluten-Free FAQs<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: 10.5pt; line-height: 115%;">With
Halloween nearly behind us, it's time to start thinking of the next few
holidays around the corner—and there are some big ones! Next up, we have
everyone's favorite gathering time, Thanksgiving, which ushers in a seemingly
endless array of parties, dinners, work events, FRIENDSgivings, and other social
gatherings, with food and drink being at the center of most of these shindigs.
So, if you are like me and gluten-free, you may understandably feel some
trepidation about RSVPing to social events this time of year.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 10.5pt; line-height: 115%;">Fortunately,
there is much to be thankful for this season when it comes to living a
gluten-free lifestyle. There is growing awareness and acceptance of gluten
sensitivity and intolerance, and gluten-free options are readily available at
most restaurants and in the aisles of most grocery stores. But perhaps one of
the "final frontiers" to conquer in the gluten-free journey is
interacting with those people who are not fully aware or respectful of their
gluten-free peers. And you are certainly bound to run into a few of them this
holiday season as you venture outside your familiar circle of friends and
family who understand your gluten-free lifestyle. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

I bet many of you have engaged in the following all-too-familiar conversation
at a social event: <i>“I’m gluten free.”</i>
“Oh! No kidding?! [Insert possibly insensitive comment / question / assumption
here].”<o:p></o:p></span></div>

assured, awkward exchanges are bound to happen, but it doesn't need to keep you
from enjoying all this season has to offer. With a little prep and a steely
sense of humor, you can conquer those sure-to-come potentially awkward
scenarios. To help you, here is my list of the 5 conversations you're bound to
have this holiday season, and the savvy response you can have on-hand to help
stave off any cringe-worthy silences—and hopefully provide some education to
others about being gluten-free.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Whether you’re gluten-free or not, tax time is stressful for
everyone! If you've got Celiac disease, some of the stress can be eased by the
fact that you may be able to receive a <span style="color: #4472c4; mso-themecolor: accent5;"><a href="http://www.celiaccentral.org/shopping/tax-deduction-guide-for-gluten-free-products/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">tax deduction</span></a> </span>for all of
those gluten-free expenses. For those of us with gluten allergies or adhering
to g-free diets however, we've got to take some of the more traditional
approaches to stress relief. As with most things, there are a few precautions
we must take before unwinding. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>G-free Massage Oil<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
One of the common cures for both physical and mental stress
is a relaxing massage. Most massage therapists use some kind of oil or lotion;
be sure to ask if you can check the ingredients, as some may contain traces of
wheat. Whenever I get a massage, I just bring along my own g-free oil, but you
could always opt for plain coconut oil – it smells great and is good for your
skin! <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>G-free Bubble Bath<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Another age-old method of relieving stress is to melt it
away in a decedent bubble bath. If your bubble bath contains any trace of
gluten however, decadence can quickly become disaster! There are plenty of
g-free bubble baths out there, but another great option is a few drops of
lavender oil. Pure lavender oil is naturally gluten-free and has been proven to
reduce stress!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>G-Free Tea<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For some, relaxation can be found in the form of a warm
beverage. Plain black or green teas are usually free of gluten, but several
others contain traces of wheat or may use barley malt as a sweetener. Be sure
to read all tea labels carefully, or <a href="https://www.rudisbakery.com/gluten-free-post/diy-herbal-tea/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">make your own herbal tea</span></a> if you are
feeling adventurous. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
While all of these methods are great ways to relax, you can
also take a shortcut: a glass of your favorite Wine - It’s always g-free! <o:p></o:p></div>

As with most holidays, the spring holidays of Easter and
Passover can be a delightful time to celebrate with family and friends
alike. Since food will be plentiful, it can
be a challenge for us gluten-free folks, but fear not for we have compiled some
suggestions. Whether its egg decorating,
Easter basket assembling or Passover preparation – spring holiday activities
can be fun and festive with the proper preparation. <o:p></o:p></div>

<b>Easter Eggs<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It seems like most Easter Sunday activities involve eggs in
one way or another – make them more fun by adding a coat of color to those
shells! Dyeing and decorating eggs is one of the most popular Easter pastimes.
Although the eggs themselves are gluten-free, we do need to be weary of those
color kits, as most of them call for vinegar. As long as you use a g-free
vinegar you’re good to go, but you can also <a href="http://www.realsimple.com/holidays-entertaining/holidays/more-holidays/homemade-easter-egg-dye" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">create your own colorful concoction</span></a> if you’re looking for something more
natural. <o:p></o:p></div>

<b>Easter Baskets<o:p></o:p></b></div>

Chocolate bunnies, marshmallow chicks and jelly beans, oh
my! I think we all know the feeling of candy-temptation all too well, and sweet
treats are especially unescapable on Easter – they are tied up in a basket with
a bow for crying out loud! Fortunately for us, there are plenty of <a href="http://celiacdisease.about.com/od/GlutenFreeSnacks/a/Gluten-Free-Easter-Candy-Updated-March-2012.htm" style="background-color: white;" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">g-free Easter candies</span></a> out there to make up a
bountiful basket for the kiddos (or to enjoy for yourself). So make like a
bunny and hop on over to your grocery store to stock up Dove chocolate bunnies,
Jelly Belly jelly beans and Peeps…just to name a few!</div>

<b>Passover Dinner <o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For most of us, holidays are just a reminder of everything
we CAN’T eat, but Passover may be one of the easiest meals for us to celebrate.
Many traditional Passover dishes are gluten-free or can be easily converted. I
even found a delicious, <a href="http://www.celiac.com/articles/22058/1/Gluten-Free-Matzo-Matzah/Page1.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">gluten-free Matzo</span></a> recipe for my Passover dinner that

tons of gluten-free Passover recipes out there, here are few that will make
your celebration a success: <o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Top
o’ the mornin’ to ya – St. Patrick’s Day is upon us! It’s one of my favorite
holidays, for more than a few reasons. First, it means spring has (almost?)
arrived. Second, we all get to don our pinch-proof green attire and head out
for a day or night of good times with good friends. And third, it brings with
it a bunch of great, holiday-themed food and drink options.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">However,
as we gluten-free folks know, we’ve got to watch those food and drink options.
The good news is, there are a ton of gluten-free meals, snacks and drinks we
can prepare and consume to elevate our Irish spirits this St. Patty’s Day, and
many more down the road.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Give
some of these a shot!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">

<h4>
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Gluten-free corned beef and cabbage</span></b></h4>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #191919;">Ah, a traditional
Irish meal! Most corned beef at your local market should be gluten-free to less
than 20</span><span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="color: black; font-family: Arial; mso-themecolor: text1;"> </span></span><a href="http://celiacdisease.about.com/od/PreventingCrossContamination/f/Less-Than-20-Parts-Per-Million.htm"><span style="color: black; mso-themecolor: text1;">parts per million</span></a><span style="color: #191919;">, but junk that spice packet that usually comes with it –
it’s loaded with gluten. No worries about the cabbage, though!<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

<h4>
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #191919; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 150%;">Gluten-free shamrock sugar cookies</span></b></h4>
<span style="color: #191919; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 150%;">These gluten-free shamrock sugar cookies will be a hit, no
matter if you're sending them with your kiddo to school or featuring them at
your Patty party. You'll need a gluten-free flour blend, sugar, vanilla
extract, a gluten-free butter substitute and (of course) green food coloring.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<div style="background: white; line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; vertical-align: baseline;">

<h4>
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #191919; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 150%;">Gluten-free
beer and whiskey</span></b></h4>
<span style="color: #191919; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 150%;">Hey now, St. Patrick’s day just wouldn’t be the same without some
adult beverages.<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"> </b>Gluten-free beers
are becoming more popular, and most experts view whiskey as safe to drink
because distillation removes almost all of the gluten. But be careful, because a
large minority of people with Celiac disease and gluten sensitivity report symptoms
after drinking it. And that green dye in the beers at the bar? It’s probably
not gluten free – why not just bring your own food coloring? <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<div style="background: white; line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; vertical-align: baseline;">

<div style="background: white; line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="color: #191919; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 150%;">Other cool ideas include thinly slicing green
peppers horizontally across the body of the pepper to uncover its cool,
internal shamrock shape; preparing cucumber rolls with gluten-free wraps to
make a tasty, green treat; and turning a rectangular veggie tray into the Irish
flag by loading up the left side with broccoli, middle with cauliflower and
right side with carrots. How festive is that?!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 105%;">
Can you believe it’s almost March
already? That means my birthday is coming up, and I discovered something cool
the other day: Did you know the holiday period is the “off season” for birthday
popularity? I didn't, but apparently as the calendar turns to spring, summer
and then early fall, more and more people have birthdays, culminating with the
most popular birthday of all: September 16. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 105%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 105%;">
That means we’re all likely to have
our share of gifts to give and parties to attend as 2015 rolls along – a lot of
them probably for kids. But, what about those youngsters we know who are gluten
free? Picking a birthday gift or throwing a party that’s appropriate for them
can be tough!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 105%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 105%;">
But, fear not. Turns out there are
a bunch of resources out there to help us all handle kiddos’ gluten-free
birthdays with grace and ease. For starters, what good is a birthday party
without a cake?! There are plenty of gluten-free cake recipes out there to help
us clear that first, crucial hurdle – and lots of ways to whip up gluten-free frosting,
too. If you are going for easy, Betty Crocker makes a variety of gluten-free
cake mixes, perfect for all kinds of birthday snacks. If you are going for
EASIER (my preferred route), find a bakery near you that sells gluten-free
treats. Here in Chicagoland, my go-to is <a href="http://www.sweetalis.com/" target="_blank">Sweet Ali’s Gluten Free Bakery</a> – their
delicious cakes and cookies make a sweet addition to any party!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 105%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 105%;">
Have you ever been to a child’s
birthday party that didn't involve pizza in some way? I can’t remember many. A
good way to fill kids’ bellies <i>and</i> get them involved with the g-free
lifestyle is to have a gluten-free pizza-making station at your party – and
you’ll thank yourself for making that decision later, when your hands are free
to tend to other things while the group prepares its own meal!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 105%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 105%;">
If food still looms as too large a
barrier to a smooth, fun party, I've had good luck focusing on themes and
goodie bags, instead of edibles. Cool decorations and fun favors can go a long
way in replacing yummy treats that may be hard to make, or not suit everyone.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 105%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 105%;">
These ideas just barely scratch the
surface of all the ways we can celebrate birthdays, the gluten-free way. Let’s
get prepared to wow our birthday boys and girls with party experience they’ll
really enjoy!<o:p></o:p></div>

Boy, I thought I knew it all. <o:p></o:p></div>

We gluten-free folks, we’re used to
doing our homework. We know which aisles to focus in on at our local
supermarkets, and which ones to steer clear from. We know the menus of a
handful of restaurants in our towns like the backs of our hands. And some of us
are pretty handy around the kitchen too, whipping up yummy gluten-free goodies
alongside normal foods without a trace of cross contamination. For quite a long
time, I’d been doing just those kinds of things too, and hadn’t had any issues
accidentally ingesting gluten. Until last week!<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 105%;">
Blame it on winter, I guess. But it
was cold and windy and my poor lips were chapped and I just had to have some
lip balm and…. Ahhh. That felt better. A little while later, though, it didn’t
feel better at all! That life-saving (okay, lip-saving) stick I applied to my
red, burning lips had gluten in it! And I was miserable.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 105%;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 105%;">
I found out the hard way: Gluten
can hide in the darndest places. I’m fine now, but I’m extra cautious these
days to avoid a repeat. That means I look more closely at medications, beauty
products, vitamins and supplements, you name it! I even found out the other day
that things labeled “wheat free” and some pickles have gluten in them! Wheat
free, but not gluten free?! I love pickles! Oh, the humanity.<o:p></o:p></div>
